Sumi Shih
Su-Mi Shih was born and raised in Nantou, Taiwan. She earned her diploma from the Applied Arts and Design program at Shih Chien College (now Shih Chien University), Taipei, Taiwan in 1988). After her graduation, she worked as an interior designer and she put her creative energy into ceramics.
In 2007, she immigrated to Canada. She has been exhibiting her work since 2009, after becoming a member of Richmond Potter's Guild.
Su-Mi Shih is inspired by her observation of the natural world of plants, trees and insects. She pays particular attention to the way the tree grows, the way the bamboo leans towards the sun. The vein of the leaf, the nodes and internodes of the bamboo stem, the twisted and figured structure of the burl, these intricacies of Nature are evidenced in the details of her work.
