Rebecca Woo
Rebecca enjoyed five great years in Taiwan in the 1960’s before a tragic accident took the life of her pilot husband, leaving her a young widow with two small children. In 1971, Rebecca’s desire to begin a new life led her and her children to immigrate to Canada. Being a single mother in a new country was a struggle; her dreams she had since childhood to write, draw and paint took second place while raising her family. However, as Rebecca’s children grew older and her duties of being a mother lessened, she began to find time for herself to draw and paint. Although Rebecca has never had any formal training, she has taken courses with Neil Patterson, Howard Carr and Alan Wylie, as well as attending local workshops. For Rebecca, painting is not about the financial success, rather it is about the joy she gets from being creative and expressing her feelings. Sharing her vision and work with others provides Rebecca with more than enough satisfaction.
Artist Statement:
For me, art is one way that a spiritual connection with my soul is achieved. I believe that “there is not a lot that one may be able to do to live longer, but there is a lot that one can do to make your life one of peace and tranquility.” My work reflects both my Taiwanese upbringing and my life in Canada. I like to combine the two to create landscape paintings of beauty, serenity and inspiration.
